The Basics of the Peanut Smart Plug

The Peanut Smart Plug from Securifi is an excellent inexpensive ZigBee on/off smart plug that will control anything in your home that plugs in for under $20! Simply plug the Peanut Smart Plug into any three prong outlet and plug your device into it and you will now be able to turn it on and off using the SmartThings App or with your Voice using Alexa. The Peanut Smart Plug is a touch larger than a golf ball and as you can see it is very simple.

On the right side is a manual on/off switch and a link button.

The back contains all of the electrical loading information. As you can see you can control anything between 100v and 125v and a maximum of 15A, 1,200 W or 1 HP. Notice that the plug portion is toward the lower part of the circle, making it possible to use the lower outlet when it is in use.

If you want to keep your top and bottom outlet usable you will have to use the top outlet, extension cord, or power strip.

Connect Peanut Smart Plug to SmartThings

Now let’s get this connected to SmartThings and take control of a device in our house! In this example, our goal is to control an electric hot water pot so my wife can start to make hot water for her tea with her voice.

Since the Peanut Smart Plug is not directly compatible, there is a little work to get the plug connected, but don’t worry, I will walk you through step by step!

The first step is to plug the Peanut Smart Plug into an outlet near your SmartThings hub. Once plugged into the outlet the light on the front will begin to flash and is now discoverable by SmartThings.

Open your SmartThings App. Go to the “My Home” tab on the bottom. Scroll all the way to the bottom and Choose “Add a Thing”

SmartThings will now search for unlinked devices.

In a second or two a “Thing” will pop up and this is the Peanut Smart Plug.

Select rename device and choose an appropriate name. You can always change this later so anything except “Thing” will work. In this example, we will call it “Hot Water”. Choose “Done” and “Save”.

Next, you will get a confirmation of the paired device and choose “OK”.

Now on your “My Home” tab under the “Things” section, you will see a circle that says “Tiles Missing”. Do not worry this is where the extra steps come in because the Peanut Smart Plug is not directly compatible with SmartThings.

SmartThings API

It’s time to leave the App and log into the SmartThings online API located at https://graph.api.smartthings.com/ . You will most likely need to visit this site in the future so be sure to add it to your favorites.

Use your login information is the email and password that you used when setting up your SmartThings Hub and your SmartThings app login info.

Choose SmartThings.

Enter your password and click “Sign in”

Now that you are logged in you need to go to the “My Locations” and Choose the correct location in the below example we only have one our home location.

After choosing your location visit the “My Devices” tab and you will see the Peanut Smart Plug we just added through the app. Remember we named it “Hot Water”. We need to edit this device so click on the blue link “Hot Water”.

You can see all of the details of the Hot Water Peanut Smart Plug. Choose  at the bottom of the device.

Here is where we get it working (finally)! Change the Name to match the Label. In our example that would be “Hot Water”. The next thing we need to change is the Type. You can see that the default type is 2015 Samsung Smart TV and this is why it is not working!

In the Type, drop-down choose “ZigBee Switch” and click  at the bottom of the screen. Now it will work!

If we got back to the SmartThings app we can see that “Hot Water” with a lightbulb. You can test it by turning it on and off by pressing the on-off toggle in the app.

Let’s customize it just a little more. Since it’s not a light bulb lets choose a more appropriate icon like a steaming cup of tea. Just choose the device and select “Update Icon”.

Select the icon that looks the best and choose “Done”.

Click “Save”.

Now we are done. You can now include the device in Scenes, Routines, and control it with your voice though Alexa. Once everything is all set in SmartThings ask Alexa to discover devices and she will include any new items. 

I hope this helped you connect the Peanut Smart Plug and will help you connect future devices. I know that seemed like many steps but trust me it will be well worth it. We use the Peanut Smart Plug’s to control lights, fish tank filter, fishtank bubbles and now the hot water kettle. You can control most everything in your house with the Peanut Smart Plug!
